Feels Like Fall

Since I LOVE fires in the our little Chiminea in the backyard (or fires anywhere), I was thrilled to see that Mike started one this evening as it was just getting dark out. Faustina refused to go to bed this evening - she must have wanted to stay up for her first 'campfire'. Mike roasted a hotdog over the fire and Faustina stared at the fire wondering what in the world was going on. It was a perfect night for it since the weather has cooled down - yesterday morning as I walked outside I even detected a bit of the fall season coming our way. As much as I'll miss summer, fall means we can enjoy the chiminea a bit more!

Quite the Responsibility

Last night I brought Charles Hugo Doyle's "Sins of Parents" to adoration. This red book looks a bit daunting with such a condemning sounding title written in gold. He wrote it in 1949 and he simply says it like it is about the importance of marriage and parenting. Doyle does not cut any corners and he speaks truth. He begins the book with a quote from Exodus 20:5 when Moses is at Mount Sinai God says to him, "I am the Lord Thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me." And I was immediately struck thinking : It is SO TRUE, parents not only affect their children, but their grandchildren and GREATgrandchildren and in turn the generations to come.

With Faustina's birth I, quite naturally, have been thinking more about parenting and I have been surprised how memories from my OWN childhood and how my parents raised me flood back. Things I haven't thought of in years and did not really even remember. Intellectually, the weight of parenting is not new to me, yet experiencing BEING a parent certainly makes me think more seriously about the this enormous responsibility of training, teaching, and guiding Faustina to be a young woman of God. Little things ARE important. I think of how my Mom sat with me for hours upon hours at the piano, she worked at the dance studio so that I could take lessons, how she spent million (literally) of hours in the kitchen making meals from scratch, how my Dad randomly brought flowers home for both my Mom and me, how he told me a story from his childhood when he put me to bed each night. (Thanks Mom and Dad!)

Of course being a good parent stems from a solid marriage relationship. Again, when I was reading this last night I was reminded of a marriage retreat at Nativity. A man who was in his 30th year of marriage shared how his own dad left a note every single morning for his wife on the coffee machine telling her how much he loved her. Every SINGLE day he did this for decades. He must have been pretty creative! And here this man at Nativity was in his own successful marriage of 30 years loving his own wife well. As Doyle says in his book, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." These stories encourage me to think more of what kind of loving acts I could do in my own marriage.

Mike and I are in the easier stages of parenting Faustina right now, but I appreciate all the reminders I can get of the wonderful responsibility of parents and I also love hearing how other people before me have successfully raised children who love the Lord. The book "Sins of Parenting" might sound intimidating - but then, parenting is no easy job!

3 months

This is not an exciting picture, but the point of it is that Faustina has hit her 3 month mark and she is officially practicing a routine! She goes to sleep for the night at 9pm and usually had been getting up around 6am for a feeding. She is low-key and hangs out in her crib for an hour or 2. Then she hangs out with Mom in the baby bjorn doing stuff around the house. She is down for another nap between noon-1pm. She is VERY interested in her hands and has actually started sucking her thumb (Mom is not so crazy about that). Routines are great, especially for Mom and Dad as they think about returning to a schedule as Mike is back at Trinity now. Alas...another summer is over!

Custom Made

Not only did Faustina receive a beautiful handmade crib from Grandpa, blanket from Bridget, but also this adorable baby sweater and matching hat from Beth Conway who is our talented colleague from Trinity. Even though it is summer, we have found several occasions for Faustina to model this cute outfit - we must enjoy it before she grows out of it!

Seattle Reunion

This past week 4 of us from our Jesuit Volunteer Year were able to meet in St. Paul to hang out for a few days. This is the FIRST time since 2004 in Seattle that Bridget, Meg, Maria, and I have all been in the same room. Very exciting, much to catch up on, and memories to laugh about. We missed you Catherine! Maria told us about her 2 years volunteering in Belize, Bridget recently bought a house, Meg has a new man in her life, and I have little Faustina around!

Bridget surprised Faustina (well, probably not, but she surprised me) with an absolutely gorgeous blanket which Faustina is enjoying in the picture. Thank you Bridget!

Keep praying for little Thomas...

Here's baby Thomas' website.

Cousins (on Dad's side)...

Nature walk

We took a drive down to Red Wing recently, and there we went on a hike. As you can see from the pics, Faustina loved staring at the trees. She couldn't keep her eyes of them! Maybe we have a 'green' baby!

No, my hair is not thinning!

THE CRIB IS HERE!!!!!!!!!

Close up of the gorgeous wood

What Faustina has been listening to lately... what a snob!

Grandpa Lee sets up the amazing crib...

Cousin Xavier goes crazy

She loves it... and her garage-sale mobile too!

A very inspiring talk for young people...

Faustina admonishes: "Teach your children well..."

This is Pope Benedict's address to the young people at World Youth Day last month in Australia. This is a wonderful talk about human nature, the Holy Spirit, and being a Christian in the 21st century. (Just click on it like normal. To save, go to 'File' and 'Save Page As', pick your location, and click 'save'. Done.)
Download it to your mp3 player from here.
(Yes, it's in English)
If you are having a hard time with his accent, the talks are in text form here.

Here are some other talks from World Youth day...

chowin' down

Faustina has discovered putting things in her mouth. She incessantly chows on anything, and has discovered that her arms are attached to her body! I wonder if she'll start teething early... hope not!
