Most people think we are crazy to go camping in a tent for a couple weeks with a 2 year old and a 3 year old. But, it actually works out surprisingly well. All kids seem to have a natural love of the outdoors and things that may bother adults don't seem to faze them at all. And I love camping so, personally, I thrive on being outside and the work involved.
We stayed at a motel once in the middle of the trip to wash up and relax. And then we stayed at a Holiday Inn on our long driving day back. This last place we stayed was total disaster; something was very wrong with the room, air ventilation or who knows what. Mike ended up getting sick among other annoying things about the stay which are not worth going into. I think it more sanitary to camp!
We found we had great success with staying at the KOA which are plentiful out west. These places have come up in the world since 10 or 20 years ago! All of them have playgrounds, most have pools, outdoor places to eat at and great scenery from your campsite. One place we stayed at in Montana had biscuit, egg, cereal breakfasts, mini gold, bikes for the kids to use, a petting zoo and it was all free! These places were absolutely perfect for kids.
